Meet Our Intern Zara

Hi, my name is Zara and I am a 2nd Year Media and Creative Industries student at Warwick University. This term, I had the incredible opportunity to complete a month-long placement internship with Live & Local as a Marketing and Administration Intern.

When I first started my internship, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. The Arts sector has always been appealing to me, and I realised that I was intrigued to see more about the behind-the-scenes work that makes rural touring possible, especially with how big of a reach Live & Local has.

Growing up, I never had a clear idea of what I wanted to do in the future. I never saw myself as someone who was ‘good’ at education, and I didn’t have many hobbies. Before deciding to come to Warwick University, I took a year off to explore my options. I applied for a few apprenticeships in business and publishing and even completed some work experience days at companies like Bloomsbury, before ultimately deciding that I wanted to come to Warwick.

As a co-owner of a small business in Events, I was able to learn so much that can help me grow my business during my time here. My sister and I started our small business in 2020, in the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. Initially, we only worked with family and friends, but since then, we have grown and have a variety of events under our belt.

Although we don’t have as much time to dedicate to OcassionsbyNae nowadays due to our busy schedules, we try our best to accept all of our bookings, and I look forward to every event we have a part in organising. This is such a passion of mine – not only the decorating aspect but also planning each detail and incorporating our clients’ visions with our own and advertising ourselves.

This is when my passion for Marketing really started and I decided to choose a Media degree since it had a bit of everything I was interested in. I would say that I have had a lot of experience with social media marketing and advertising, so being here at Live & Local, I was able to gain a better understanding of more traditional marketing such as email campaigns, which was new to me.

With everyone being so welcoming at the office, I was able to learn so much – especially from team meetings and company catchups and watching what they do every day, it was really insightful. A typical day for me at the office usually consisted of working on my evaluation project, shadowing someone as they completed a task, sitting in on company meetings and getting to chat with everyone about all kinds of things. One of the tasks that I had a chance to work on was researching and designing company tote bags that would be given as gifts to Live & Local’s Friends membership. I got to speak with multiple companies and compile my research together for the management team to choose the best option. The finished products were way better than I would have imagined.

One of my favourite memories from my time here was the craft night we had. I had so much fun making a wreath and just hanging out and chatting to everyone. Although my wreath-making skills are not the best, it was a great experience, and it was nice to spend some time with everyone outside of work.

I got to sit in on the company meetings, where everyone got together and shared their news and updates. This was really informative for me, especially when I first started and had a very limited understanding of Rural Touring. Listening to everyone talk about what they had been doing and what was going on helped me to understand more about Live & Local and the Community Touring Scheme.

My project with Live & Local focused on their methods of evaluation – I was tasked with an audit to determine the effectiveness of the current methods, as well as researching other suggestions and new ideas. I created a report of my research and findings.

I had a wonderful time at Live & Local, and it was an experience that has changed my perspective on the Arts sector. The skills and knowledge I have gained from working with this wonderful team will be something I take with me to every future opportunity, and I am excited to see what other projects L&L bring to life next!
