Earth Day
Team
To celebrate Earth Day and our commitment to environmental sustainability, our team rolled up our sleeves for a meaningful cause! We spent the afternoon at Canalside Community Farm in Radford Semele, planting 15 trees - one for each team member.
Amid the fresh air and fertile soil, we gained insight into the farm’s sustainable practices and the diverse ecosystems that flourish there.
It was a rewarding experience filled with teamwork, hands-on learning, and the satisfaction of making a lasting impact - one tree at a time!
On Wednesday 26th February, during some very unpredictable rain storms, the Live & Local team donned their wellies and waterproofs and headed to the Canalside Community Farm in Radford Semele to reconnect with nature and plant some trees.
With spirits high and (most) hands suitably gloved, we set out to find the perfect spot for our trees...
We began by collecting our box of Scots Pine trees before setting off towards the Children's forest to give them a new home.
We chose to plant 15 trees - one for each Live & Local team member and enough to carbon offset our website for 3 years!
During the short walk to the Children's Forest we stopped along the way to learn more about the Community Farm and the nature that surrounded us. Here our Office Manager Kristie is telling us all about the farm's fabulous Hazelnut trees.
The farm offers members of the local community weekly seasonal produce including eggs, herbs and vegetables and encourages everyone to participate in the process of growing the food and enjoy the land on which it is grown.
Once we reached the Children's Forest we took a moment and gathered around the firepit to share in a gratitude circle. We each took a turn to share something we were grateful for in that moment - including that it had finally stopped raining! But for how long...
Here is Rural Hub Towns Community Engagement Officer Martyn's reflections after the day: "It was a fun afternoon of planting, singing and enjoying the fresh air. As we were planting trees close to each other so they could communicate as they grew, it also brought the team together where we could reflect and grow together too."
As the sun began to peek through the clouds, our Office Manager, Kristie, taught us about the trees and how to plant them in the ground before we all got stuck in.
First, we had to locate a suitable area for the trees, making sure we left enough space for their roots to grow. Thanks to the rain, the ground was soft and the team got pretty muddy...
Here we can see Beau has found a great spot for their Scots Pine and the digging begins!
"It's an honour to think that I've planted a tree which might be there long after I've gone. Also, I live in the centre of Birmingham, so it was such a lovely breath of fresh air to spend the afternoon out in the countryside." - Beau, Admin & Marketing Assistant
The afternoon provided a fantastic opportunity for all members of our team to work together. Here we can see our Audience Engagement Officer, Brian and Rural Hub Towns Community Engagement Officer, Martyn proudly showing off one of the trees they planted.
Once all of our trees were planted, we gathered around to learn a song to sing to the trees to encourage them to grow. After a few attempts at learning the words, we finally all managed to join in together!
The Live & Local management team even staged an album cover shoot!
Despite the rain and mud... our team had a fantastic afternoon in nature. And we did it all in style - with glittery wellies!
