New for this season is a comedy play written especially for rural venues with an adult (and young adult) in mind. Pentabus Theatre has 40 years experience touring realistic and surprising theatre shows to small venues, where often meaty topics are tackled in an entertaining way. In this show they tackle the subject of ‘re-wilding’ of the countryside – an issue which has strong arguments for and against. Set in a village hall, the community have gathered to face the crisis of a pack of wolves which seem to have appeared in the area. No-one knows where they have come from and the dilemmas range from how the children will get to school to the threat of the local line dancing class being cancelled. Two actors perform multiple roles as one extraordinary day in an ordinary English village unfolds. In the first half of the show we meet all the local characters, experience the gossip and the panic. In the second half even the panicky ones are trying to come up with a solution (which not everyone agrees on). And by then your audience will be forming their own theories on what might be familiar territory if your community has faced a ‘threat’ like this. Just who has released these animals? Have they escaped or have they been deliberately freed, and more to the point, what can be done about them and who’s going to do it? For a nation regularly glued to Springwatch and which is up in arms when David Attenborough mentions a threatened species, the play asks the question just how comfortable would we be if ‘real’ wildlife appeared in our back yard?
'Pentabus are one of British Theatre's many unsung treasures; not flashy or fashionable but quietly nurturing a steady stream of talented writers and directors, and offering rural audiences superb touring shows.' Lyn Gardner, The Guardian
