Silent Film & Live Music - The Lodger - A Story of the London Fog (1927) (PG)

Show Details

Presented by Minima

Performance date and time
Friday, 17th May 2019
8:00 PM

Set in a foggy and unsettled London with a Jack the Ripper-style serial killer on the loose, The Lodger was Alfred Hitchcock's first major commercial and critical success, an electrifying silent masterpiece of atmospheric thriller filmmaking.

'Acclaimed soundscapers' (Time Out) Minima capture the film's mood perfectly, its unmistakably spine-tingling live music clinging to each twist of the movie. A simply extraordinary evening. _________________________________________________________________

Pre-first world war London is being terrorised by a Jack the Ripper-style murderer, 'The Avenger', who targets young fair-haired women. A mysterious new lodger arrives at the anonymous boarding house of Mr and Mrs Bunting, and begins to entrance the landlady's pretty daughter Daisy - who is being courted by a Scotland Yard detective on the killer's trail. When the lodger begins behaving strangely, he attracts suspicion. With his mysterious nighttime excursions, might he not be the killer himself?

Made in 1926 for Michael Balcon's new Gainsborough studios, 'The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog' was Alfred Hitchcock's first thriller, and his first critical and commercial success, quickly establishing him as a name director. The film was shown to the press in September 1926 and described in glowing terms by trade journal Bioscope: 'It is possible that this film is the finest British production ever made.' It is also generally acknowledged to be the one where Hitchcock properly found his 'voice': that distinctive combination of death and fetishism, trick shots and music-hall humour, intense menace and elegant camerawork that assured his place among cinema's giants.

Starring the ambiguously appealing matinee idol Ivor Novello as the strange, tortured room-renter of the title, the film is also notable for the first of Hitchcock's characteristic cameo appearances, as a newspaper editor – he claimed his part was due to the non-appearance of a bit-part actor.

Minima's highly effective new Lodger score was written in 2014 and was the first to feature its expanded instrumental line-up: with drums, bass, guitar and cello now augmented to include double bass, dulcimer, synthesizer, mandolin and autoharp.
