A Parlour Concert with Mister Keith

Show Details

Presented by Mister Keith

Performance date and time
Saturday, 18th January 2020
7:00 PM

A 'splendid' evening of gently quirky, expertly crafted songs - think Ray Davies, Squeeze - stories and humour by the self-professed originator of 'Victorian Pop'. With song styles varying from jaunty showground to slow lament, all carried forward by lilting melodies and warm, quintessentially English vocals, the bowler-hatted Mister Keith and his mini 'orchestra' of multi-instrumentalists evoke memories of times gone by. An intimate little gem*. * including specially blended tea drinking and interval Victorian table games. _________________________________________________________________

Britain has a happy knack of producing gently quirky, lyrical and narrative song-writing – think of Ray Davies, the Beatles, Stackridge, Squeeze – and Mister Kieth (the alias of songwriter Keith Ayling) represents a new addition to this tradition. With his Parlour Concerts Mister Keith welcomes all on an intimate musical journey by 'flickering' candlelight using expertly crafted songs, stories and humour referencing a forgotten era. With a nod to Victoriana and English life, Mister Keith and his small 'orchestra' of multi-instrumentalists bring the audience in to a world of charming, bittersweet and darkly romantic song that invokes memories of times gone by, first love and lost love. With warm, easy to listen melodies, humorous anecdotes, lush and playful strings, keys, brass and woodwind, toe tapping, inventive percussion and soaring vocals - and the odd bit of dancing around the room or writing impromptu songs on the spot or conducting the audience as a choir – this is a fantastically entertaining evening. Throughout his 28-year career Mister Keith has performed on BBC, ITV, Five and MTV and at the Barbican Centre and Greenbelt Festival (the latter for 19 consecutive years). 'The best musician in a bowler hat… unless Mr Ben plays guitar!' Big Comfy Folk Club

'Stunning!' BBC Introducing, Coventry & Warwickshire 'Sensational.' BBC Radio Manchester ★★★★ 'Poppy and accessible in its acoustic finery… eminently listenable.' R2 Magazine
