Long Lost Home

Show Details

Presented by Daria Kulesh Duo

Performance date and time
Saturday, 21st March 2020
7:30 PM

With her gorgeous voice, fantastic music, excellent songwriting and considerable raconteur skills Daria Kulesh is fast becoming one of the UK folk scene's favourite artists. Singing in English and her native Russian tongue, Daria's soaring, evocative vocals and vibrant and colourful stories and songs take you on a journey, both historic and personal, through the past in tribute to and celebration of her grandmother and her family and her grandmother's long-lost homeland of Ingushetia. Deep in the Caucasus Mountains, this is an ancient land of breathtaking beauty and harrowing history, fascinating folklore and age-old traditions. During the Caucasus Wars of the early 19th century it was conquered by and absorbed into Russia. In 1944, falsely accused of collaboration with the Nazis, it was subject to genocide under the orders of Stalin and, in 1992, ethnic cleansing. Daria's intrepid quest to recreate, at least in music and song, a world which has been lost has led her from the folk clubs of Hertfordshire to the mountains of Caucasus; from Cadogan Hall London to Gradsky Hall in Moscow. 'Long Lost Home' has enjoyed national radio play and incredible reviews calling it a 'triumph', a 'masterpiece'. Mike Harding (BBC Radio 2 'Folk Show') praised 'The Moon and the Pilot' as 'one of the most beautiful new songs of the last 10 years. Although much of the subject matter has a darkness to it, there's also a spirit of hope and humanity and kindness to these songs. Daria Kulesh is a hardworking and in-demand live performer, with 80+ concert appearances in the UK and abroad last year alone, six UK tours under her belt so far, a growing number of venue and festival bookings, and much acclaim for her previous rural tours (for Arts Out West, SEALL, Isle of Skye). With her exceptional, crystal-clear vocals and alluring accent Daria Kulesh engages completely, and is here accompanied by either the wonderful guitarist and pianist Jonny Dyer (Vicki Swan & Jonny Dyer), the exquisite guitarist Tristan Seume (Jackie Oates Band) or the hugely talented pianist Marina Osman (Kara). 'Superb artistry - and very informative. Excellent blend of music, performance and insight into a period of history we were unaware of.' SEALL (Skye Events for All), Sabhal Mor Ostaig, Isle of Skye 'Haunting eastern European and Russian influence, full of folklore and magic... a crimson rose of a voice.' Radio Warwickshire 'Her voice was simply magnificent, just stunning. The accompanist was seriously high quality. Mesmerising and ethereal.' The Nettle (Scotland) (Russia/ UK/ Belarus)
