We're on the eve of marking the centenary of one of the masterpieces that elevated cinema to the great art form of the 20th century; 'The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari'.

Robert Wiene's timeless classic is arguably the most visually influential movie of the silent period. As stated by Mark Kermode, chief film critic for The Observer and co-presenter of 'The Film Review' for BBC News at Five, it 'casts [an] unbreakable spell – thrilling, chilling, electrifying.' The Guardian named it one of the 25 best horror films of all time. Its surrealism inspired David Bowie.

It is accompanied here by a 'spellbinding' (The Guardian) live soundtrack performed by Minima, 'one of the leading bands accompanying silent film in Europe' (Robert Rider, Head of Cinema, Barbican Centre, London). Minima are a Bristol-based four-piece group, with instrumentation including cello, double bass, baritone guitar, acoustic and electric guitars, mandolin, autoharp, dulcimer, synthesizer, glockenspiel and drum kit. In performance they use no backing tracks or pre-recorded material.

Highlights over the years have included performances at the Glastonbury Festival, the Barbican Centre, BFI Southbank and the Transylvania International Film Festival. Although primarily a live performance group they have recorded music for short films by contemporary filmmakers.

'One of the coolest events… Minima capture the film's disturbing mood perfectly.' Daily Telegraph

★★★★★ 'Thrilling, chilling, electrifying.' The Observer ★★★★★ The Guardian
