Silent Film & Live Music - The Lodger - A Story of the London Fog (1927) (PG)

Show Details

Presented by Minima

Performance date and time
Friday, 18th October 2019
8:00 PM

Set in a foggy and unsettled London with a Jack the Ripper-style serial killer on the loose, The Lodger was Alfred Hitchcock's first major commercial and critical success, an electrifying silent masterpiece of atmospheric thriller filmmaking.

Acclaimed soundscapers' (Time Out) Minima capture the film's mood perfectly, its unmistakably spine-tingling live music clinging to each twist of the movie. A simply extraordinary evening.

Starring the ambiguously appealing matinee idol Ivor Novello as the strange, tortured room-renter of the title, the film is also notable for the first of Hitchcock's characteristic cameo appearances, as a newspaper editor - he claimed his part was due to the non-appearance of a bit-part actor.

★★★★★ 'Alfred Hitchcock's 1926 silent melodrama about a Ripper-style killer is gripping in its sheer brio and control.' The Guardian

Minima's highly effective new 'Lodger' score was written in 2014 and was the first to feature its expanded instrumental line-up: with drums, bass, guitar and cello now augmented to include double bass, dulcimer, synthesizer, mandolin and autoharp.

Formed in 2006, this Bristol-based four-piece performs in cinemas and art centres, as well as music and film festivals, playing original live soundtracks to silent films. Its repertoire includes set scores to classic silents including the 1925 'Phantom of the Opera', featuring Lon Chaney, and German horror films 'Nosferatu' and 'The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari'. Highlights over the years have included performances at the Glastonbury Festival, the Barbican Centre, BFI Southbank and the Transylvania International Film Festival.

'Minima are one of the leading bands accompanying silent film in Europe.' Robert Rider, Head of Cinema, Barbican Centre, London

'Minima's unmistakably spine-tingling music clung to each twist of the movie… spellbinding accompaniment.' The Guardian

'A superbly sinister live score by the soundtrack group Minima.' Financial Times
