From the writer A J Cronin and freely adapted by Alex Ferguson, this is a physical theatre version of the classic 1930s novel. Davie Fenwick leaves his mining village on a university scholarship intent on returning to better support the miners against the pit owners. Returning home as the local schoolteacher before finishing his degree. Davie struggles with his new role and fitting back into his community, especially when he realises his wife Jenny still loves her former boyfriend. It is only when he learns that his father and the other miners are going to have to continue working on a possibly deadly coal seam, he decides to act.
