The Rude Mechanicals Band in Concert

Show Details

Presented by The Rude Mechanicals Band

Performance date and time
Friday, 15th March 2019
7:30 PM

In this delightful gem of a concert, The Rude Mechanicals Band, led by the exceptional song-smith Wes Finch, and galvanised by their love of literature, draw on the words of Shakespeare, WB Yeats, William Blake, Phillip Larkin, John Masefield and more for their witty, erudite, and achingly lovely songs.

With a blast of originality and fantastic energy, they combine bittersweet acoustic ballads, subtle folk-classical music, jazz, chanson and enchanting poetry recitation into a live show of infectious goodwill and sense of occasion. _________________________________________________________________

'The man that hath no music in himself, Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds ... Let no such man be trusted. Mark the music.'

The Rude Mechanicals Band combine their passion for poetry and their love of music and bring them together for unique live experiences. Words from the greats of British poetry are brought to life with fresh classical and folk inspired compositions and embellished with brilliant recitation and occasional on and off-stage dancing.

Invigorating guitar and exceptional vocals are accompanied by skilful and vivacious double bass and the subtly interweaving string lines of violin and viola, all is accentuated by percussion and drums.

William Shakespeare was the main inspiration and theme for the band's 2017 debut release 'Exit, Pursued by Bear', described by FATEA Magazine as: 'A gem of an album, combining bittersweet contemporary style acoustic ballads, with Shakespeare's words and a subtle folk-blues swing.'

Initially, Wes wrote the songs in response to a competition run by The Royal Shakespeare Company. The songs weren't in fact ever entered into the competition but after being picked up via BBC Introducing in 2016, Wes, Ben and Jools were asked to play them at The RSC's Other Place Theatre in Stratford as part of the BBC Radio 3 programme 'In Tune', celebrating 400 years of Shakespeare. Since then the group has grown to include Katrin and John and continues to expand its repertoire; most recently to include John Masefield and Philip Larkin.

Over the last few years Wes has been described by Mercury Prize nominated producer Gerry Diver (Sam Lee, Lisa Knapp) as 'a blast of originality, primal energy and musical magic in a market saturated with cloned artists and homogenised songs', and has shared stages with the likes of Billy Bragg, Martin Carthy, Richard Thompson, Lucy Ward, Merry Hell and O'Hooley & Tidow at various venues, folk clubs and festivals.

'A welcome and singular addition to the list of newbloods reinvigorating British folk music.' Uncut Magazine (on Wes Finch)
