The Importance of Being Earnest

Show Details

Presented by Two Gents Productions

Performance date and time
Friday, 8th February 2019
7:30 PM

Low-tech but high speed, chances are you'll never have seen Oscar Wilde's much-loved masterpiece – handbags, epigrams, snobbery and all – performed like this before. Taking inspiration from traditional South African 'protest theatre' the staging is bare-boned but the story loses none of its bite for this.

Wilde's deft insights into class, money, marriage, morals and the dangerous delights of a double identity sparkle in this inventive, energetic and funny staging. The two superb performers - plus the odd person pulled from the audience and used as human puppets - bring quick wit and buckets of charm to this 'trivial comedy for serious people', making it a rollercoaster of a show.

★★★★ 'Uproariously entertaining.' The Guardian (on 'Vakomana Vaviri Ve Zimbabwe' / 'Two Gentlemen of Verona')

'A rollicking, fast-paced bit of storytelling.' Time Out (on 'Kupenga Kwa Hamlet')
