Presented by Oh la la!
Performance date and time
Saturday, 2nd February 2019
Performing live, this very charming and sophisticated acoustic quartet delight with their eclectic set of gorgeous Parisian nightlife music; authentic musette, playful chanson réaliste, 60s French pop and classic jazz. Music of another time: of Burt Bacharach, Edith Piaf and Jacques Brel; Françoise Hardy and Serge Gainsbourg.
Unique entertainers, they blend their rich and evocative sound with Gallic coolness, natural panache and a colossal sense of fun. Magnificent. _________________________________________________________________
Stephanie Mair: vocals, accordion
Olly Wilby: tenor saxophone, clarinet
Colin Oxley: guitar
Julian Bury: double bass
Oh La La delight with their cool blend of classy musicianship, vivid and telling French vocals and authentic Parisian musette, chanson (seen by some as France's indigenous version of soul music), flamboyant 1960's pop, classic jazz and 'impressionist' music (such as the cancan) - transporting audiences to that 'certain little café in Paris, just by the Seine'.
There are exquisite treatments of songs made famous by Edith Piaf, the 'Little Sparrow', one of Paris's most famous daughters, Serge Gainsbourg, France's answer to David Bowie, Mick Jagger and John Lennon rolled into one smoke cloud of controversy, and Francoise Hardy, the light-spirited yé yé girl. Stephanie Mair turns every song into a miniature drama, delivered with elegance, sensuality and sharp wit, well supported by her excellent musicians.
A whistlestop tour of the music of the 'City of Lights', this is intimate, glamourous and sophisticated easy-listening.
Oh La La perform at music venues throughout the country, including the Royal Opera House, Wilton Music Hall, the National Theatre, St Martin-in-the-Fields and the Royal Albert Hall Elgar Room, and at music festivals such as the London City Festival, Richmond World Music Festival and Bloomsbury Festival.
